Concept note-1: -The Boxer Rebellion was an uprising against foreigners that occurred in China about 1900, begun by peasants but eventually supported by the government. A Chinese secret society known as the Boxers embarked on a violent campaign to drive all foreigners from China. Several countries sent troops to halt the attacks.
Concept note-2: -The leading force of the Boxer Rebellion was a secret society called the Righteous and Harmonious Fists. Largely made up of poor and unemployed young Chinese men, the society was labeled ‘The Boxers’ by Western newspapers in reference to the military exercises they practiced.
Concept note-3: -Sanda (Chinese: ; pinyin: Sǎndǎ), formerly Sanshou (Chinese: ; pinyin: Sǎnshǒu), also known as Chinese boxing or Chinese kickboxing, is the official Chinese kickboxing full-contact combat sport.
Concept note-4: -The principal causes of the Boxer Rebellion were economic issues and the disputes between the Chinese and foreign missionaries in the wake of the Opium Wars (1839–1842 and 1856–1860). After the legalization of the propagation of Christianity in China around 1860, foreign missionaries were very active in Shandong.
