Concept note-1: -For Mahan, control of the Caribbean was essential to control of the canal, which was essential for the protection of all three coastlines of the United States. As an essentially “island” nation, it was of the utmost importance that the United States protect its coastline and its interests with a powerful navy.
Concept note-2: -The main purpose of sea power has always been to protect friendly shipping from enemy attack and to destroy or hinder the enemy’s shipping-both commercial and military.
Concept note-3: -In 1890 Mahan published his college lectures as The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783. In this book he argued for the paramount importance of sea power in national historical supremacy.
