EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Spurred by the nationalism aroused by the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley. Hawaii was made a territory in 1900, and Dole became its first governor.

Concept note-2: -The war originated in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain, which began in February 1895. Spain’s brutally repressive measures to halt the rebellion were graphically portrayed for the U.S. public by several sensational newspapers engaging in yellow journalism, and American sympathy for the Cuban rebels rose.

Concept note-3: -It is a little known fact that the United States had an ally during the Spanish-American War, the island Republic of Hawai’i. In 1898, a Hawaiian Annexation Commission headed by Lorrin Thurston was in Washington attempting to negotiate union with the United States.

Concept note-4: -Hawaii was not annexed as result of the Spanish-American War.
