Concept note-1: -House Joint Resolution 259, 55th Congress, 2nd session, known as the “Newlands Resolution, ” passed Congress and was signed into law by President McKinley on July 7, 1898-the Hawaiian islands were officially annexed by the United States.
Concept note-2: -The Hawaiian islands, located in the center of the Pacific, provided a strategic location for a U.S. military base and would help to establish the U.S. as a world superpower.
Concept note-3: -On January 16, 1893, United States troops invaded the Hawaiian Kingdom without just cause, which led to a conditional surrender by the Hawaiian Kingdom’s executive monarch, Her Majesty Queen Lili’uokalani, the following day.
Concept note-4: -In January 1893, a revolutionary “Committee of Safety, ” organized by Sanford B. Dole, staged a coup against Queen Liliuokalani with the tacit support of the United States.
