Concept note-1: -1917–22: The United States once again leads a military intervention in Cuba after a disputed presidential election (following the reelection of Mario García Menocal) and armed rebellion led by former President José Miguel Gómez.
Concept note-2: -From 1895–1898, the violent conflict in Cuba captured the attention of Americans because of the economic and political instability that it produced in a region within such close geographical proximity to the United States.
Concept note-3: -The US was very concerned over the events in Cuba. Some Americans felt US involvement would hurt foreign trade. Others sympathized with Cuban freedom (we fought for our independence in 1776).
Concept note-4: -Yellow Journalism Reports of the Cuban Revolution reached Americans through newspapers. Two fiercely competitive newspapers, the New York Journal and the New York World, generated much of the American support for the rebels through their creatively dramatized stories of Spanish atrocities.
