Concept note-1: -In a protectorate, the imperial power protected local rulers against rebellions and invasion. In return, rulers usually had to accept Europeans’ advice on how to govern their countries.

Concept note-2: -Britain established a protectorate over the Niger River region in Africa. Puerto Rico was also a US protectorate after the Spanish American War. A sphere of influence is when an outside power claims rights and privileges over an area or region.

Concept note-3: -In a protectorate, the imperial power allowed local rulers to remain in control while protecting them against rebellion and invasion. In return, local rulers had to accept advice from the Europeans on how to govern their country.
