Concept note-1: -This Teller Amendment committed the U.S. Government to granting Cuba its independence following the removal of Spanish forces.

Concept note-2: -Approved on May 22, 1903, the Platt Amendment was a treaty between the U.S. and Cuba that attempted to protect Cuba’s independence from foreign intervention. It permitted extensive U.S. involvement in Cuban international and domestic affairs for the enforcement of Cuban independence.

Concept note-3: -Representatives of Spain and the United States signed a peace treaty in Paris on December 10, 1898, which established the independence of Cuba, ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States, and allowed the victorious power to purchase the Philippines Islands from Spain for $20 million.

Concept note-4: -Cubans opposed the provisions of the Platt Amendment. They claimed it gave far too much power to the United States and deprived Cubans of their independence.
