Concept note-1: -Hearst acquired more newspapers and created a chain that numbered nearly 30 papers in major American cities at its peak. He later expanded to magazines, creating the largest newspaper and magazine business in the world.
Concept note-2: -William Randolph Hearst (d. 1951), the son of a successful miner, became proprietor of The San Francisco Examiner at age 24 in 1887. He went on to acquire additional newspapers before entering into radio broadcasting and television. Hearst became a New York Congressman in 1902.
Concept note-3: -Through dishonest and exaggerated reportage, Hearst’s newspapers whipped up public sentiment against Spain so much that they actually helped cause the Spanish-American War of 1898.
Concept note-4: -Hearst entered the Chicago market in 1900 by establishing the Chicago American, an evening paper; in 1902, he started a morning edition, the Chicago Examiner. In 1918, Hearst also bought the long-established Chicago Herald and merged it with his morning paper to form the Herald-Examiner.
