Concept note-1: -By the mid-nineteenth century, Cuba had become the world’s leading sugar producer, providing about a third of the world’s supply.
Concept note-2: -In the 1800s, Cuban sugar plantations became the most important world producer of sugar, thanks to the expansion of slavery and a relentless focus on improving the island’s sugar technology.
Concept note-3: -Around the time of the US Civil War, we got half our sugar from Cuba and half from Louisianna.
Concept note-4: -Cuba’s output has averaged around 1.4 million metric tons of raw sugar over the last five years, compared with an industry high of 8 million tons in 1989. The harvest runs from November into May with peak yields from January through mid-April.
