EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Japan’s opening to the West enabled it to modernize its military, and to rise quickly to the position of the most formidable Asian power in the Pacific.

Concept note-2: -Perry, on behalf of the U.S. government, forced Japan to enter into trade with the United States and demanded a treaty permitting trade and the opening of Japanese ports to U.S. merchant ships.

Concept note-3: -The expedition was commanded by Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, under orders from President Millard Fillmore. Perry’s primary goal was to force an end to Japan’s 220-year-old policy of isolation and to open Japanese ports to American trade, through the use of gunboat diplomacy if necessary.

Concept note-4: -China and Japan responded to Western imperialism differently. Essentially, Japan gave in to the Western pressure to opening their ports and cities to foreign trade and relations, while China refused. This allowed Japan to very successfully modernize.
