Concept note-1: -On the Hawaiian Islands, a group of American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow Queen Liliuokalani, the Hawaiian monarch, and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president.
Concept note-2: -Defying U.S. President Grover Cleveland, their ultimate goal was to overthrow Queen Lili’uokalani and seek annexation of the Hawaiian Islands by the United States.
Concept note-3: -When Queen Liliuokalani moved to establish a stronger monarchy, Americans under the leadership of Samuel Dole deposed her in 1893. The planters’ belief that a coup and annexation by the United States would remove the threat of a devastating tariff on their sugar also spurred them to action.
