Concept note-1: -U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba, and to cede sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. The United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii during the conflict.

Concept note-2: -Representatives of Spain and the United States signed a peace treaty in Paris on December 10, 1898, which established the independence of Cuba, ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States, and allowed the victorious power to purchase the Philippines Islands from Spain for $20 million.

Concept note-3: -One of the earliest examples is US intervention in Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain, which led to the Spanish-American War in 1898. Encouraged by sensationalist American journalism about the Cuban conflict and the mysterious sinking of the US Navy battleship.

Concept note-4: -The Spanish American War had a major impact on American ad world history. After the war, the United States was transformed into a world power. Its new far-flung colonies allowed for it to have a worldwide navy allowing for the nation to become a worldwide economic power.

Concept note-5: -The conquests of 1898 did not entirely mimic the European colonial model. In some senses, American actions 1898 represented a “New Imperialism", a new and unique empire, separate from the European colonial tradition and distinctly American.
