EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Lili’uokalani became queen in 1891 and worked to restore power to the Hawaiian monarchy and her people. In 1892, along with the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawai’i she passed an act to protect public lands from privatization.

Concept note-2: -This idea was later copied by many other planters on the islands. As the Civil War destroyed agriculture in the South, it helped sugar become a successful venture in Hawaii. Sugar’s success also benefitted the Hawaiian monarchy as an additional source of income for its island kingdom.

Concept note-3: -People then knew the largest plantations as the “Big Five.” This included: Castle & Cooke, Alexander & Baldwin, C. Brewer & Co., American Factors and Theo H. Davies & Co. These companies possessed great power during the early 20th century and controlled 90% of the sugar business.

Concept note-4: -Sugarcane and pineapple plantations were the largest employers in Hawaiʻi. Today both are gone, production having moved to other countries.
