Concept note-1: -These Open Door Notes aimed to secure international agreement to the U.S. policy of promoting equal opportunity for international trade and commerce in China, and respect for China’s administrative and territorial integrity.
Concept note-2: -The term “Open Door” also describes the economic policy initiated by Deng Xiaoping in 1978 to open China to foreign businesses that wanted to invest in the country. The policy set into motion the economic transformation of China.
Concept note-3: -The concept of Open Door Notes was initiated by Secretary of State John Hay. He sent these documents to other Western countries to explain how the Open Door Policy would work. They were intended to preserve the United States’ ability to trade with China while not antagonizing other countries to the point of war.
