Concept note-1: -Perryʼs expedition to Japan (The Meiji Restoration) to the result of the Opium War in China because both events increased Western trade and influence in Asia.

Concept note-2: -The Japanese grudgingly agreed to Perry’s demands, and the two sides signed the Treaty of Kanagawa on March 31, 1854. According to the terms of the treaty, Japan would protect stranded seamen and open two ports for refueling and provisioning American ships: Shimoda and Hakodate.

Concept note-3: -How did Perry help the United States expand its influence in Asia? Perry negotiated the first treaty between the United States and Japan.

Concept note-4: -The Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 underscored China’s defeat in the First Opium War and forced China to open dozens of cities to Western traders (so-called treaty ports), dramatically ending centuries during which China developed in relative isolation from the West.

Concept note-5: -What was Commodore Perry’s significant contribution to the beginning of Japan’s transformation? He opened Japan to the West. Which similar challenge did China and Japan face following the Sino-Japanese War? Their isolation left them far behind Europe.
