Concept note-1: -Queen Lili’uokalani was the last sovereign of Hawai’i. Many continue to admire Lili’uokalani for her resolute and peaceful resistance to the US businessmen who ended her reign and to the United States’ annexation of Hawai’i during the 1890s.

Concept note-2: -’. When her brother died suddenly in 1891, Liliokalani assumed the throne, becoming the first and only sovereign queen of Hawai. With support from the majority of native Hawaiians, she attempted to overturn the Bayonet Constitution.

Concept note-3: -In January 1893, a group of American and European businessmen, with the support of U.S. Minister John Stevens and a contingent of U.S. Marines, staged a coup to depose the queen. Liliuokalani surrendered, with hopes of appealing to President Cleveland to reinstate her.

Concept note-4: -Queen Liliuokalani was arrested for her alleged role in the coup and convicted of treason; while under house arrest, the queen agreed to formally abdicate and dissolve the monarchy. In 1898, the United States annexed Hawaii. Hawaii was administered as a U.S. territory until 1959, when it became the 50th state.
