EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -With the support of the U.S. government, Panama issues a declaration of independence from Colombia. The revolution was engineered by a Panamanian faction backed by the Panama Canal Company, a French-U.S. corporation that hoped to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans with a waterway across the Isthmus of Panama.
Concept note-2: -President Roosevelt responded by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama City (on the Pacific) and Colón (on the Atlantic) in support of Panamanian independence. Colombian troops were unable to negotiate the jungles of the Darien Strait and Panama declared independence on November 3, 1903.
Concept note-3: -Theodore Roosevelt, negotiated the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty, giving the U.S. control of the Canal Zone. Work under U.S. supervision began in 1904, and the Panama Canal was completed in 1914. Tens of thousands of people, mostly labourers from Barbados, Martinique, and Guadeloupe, worked on the project.
Concept note-4: -Hay and Bunau-Varilla signed the canal treaty on November 18, 1903. It gave the United States the right to construct and operate a canal “in perpetuity” for $10 million, an annual payment of $250, 000, and a guarantee of Panama’s independence. No Panamanians had participated in the negotiations.
Concept note-5: -With the help of the United States, a revolution occurred in Colombia that led to Panama’s proclaiming its independence on November 4, 1903. A scant two weeks later Panama signed a treaty allowing the U.S. to build, own, and control the Panama Canal.
