Concept note-1: -The control of malaria was vital for the construction of the Panama Canal. The discovery by Major Ronald Ross that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes had tremendous impact on development programs in the tropics.

Concept note-2: -Finally, on November 11 1906, the last victim of yellow fever on the Panama Canal died. The yellow fever epidemic was over.

Concept note-3: -Dr. William Gorgas eradicated yellow fever in Panama, allowing American workers to finish the project that dogged the French.

Concept note-4: -The Americans encountered many of the same obstacles as the French in the project’s first year as yellow fever and malaria killed hundreds of workers.

Concept note-5: -In a series of experiments, beginning in June 1900, the Reed Commission eventually proved that yellow fever was spread not by poor sanitation, but by female Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes, which carried the virus from person to person with their bites.
