EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The U.S. Department of State, in its U.S. Relations With Taiwan fact sheet, states “[T]he United States and Taiwan enjoy a robust unofficial relationship. The 1979 U.S.–P.R.C. Joint Communiqué switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

Concept note-2: -The controversy surrounding the political status of Taiwan or the Taiwan issue is a result of World War II, the second phase of the Chinese Civil War (1945–1949), and the Cold War. The basic issue hinges on who the islands of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu should be administered by.

Concept note-3: -The ROC maintained its claim of being the sole legitimate representative of China and its territory, although this has been downplayed since its democratization in the 1990s. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC.

Concept note-4: -On October 25, 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which “restored” the People’s Republic of China to the Chinese seat at the UN and “expelled” the Republic of China (Taiwan). Since then, Taiwan has sought to maintain its international space without the benefits of UN membership.
