Concept note-1: -’Moral’ diplomacy is a form of diplomacy proposed by President Woodrow Wilson in his 1912 United States presidential election. Moral diplomacy is the system in which support is given only to countries whose beliefs are analogous to that of the nation.
Concept note-2: -Wilson stated the moral principles he believed necessary for world peace. Governments, he said, must exist by the “consent of the governed” and enjoy the right to self-determination. Nations must reduce their armies and navies. All must enjoy “freedom of the seas” to engage in trade.
Concept note-3: -Legacy of Wilsonianism The United States moved to the forefront of world powers, and Wilson’s view of American foreign policy, now known as “Wilsonianism, ” continues to influence debates and ideas about America’s role as a global leader and the right of national self-determination.
Concept note-4: -Because Wilson’s beliefs often guided his foreign policy decisions, his foreign policy was dubbed moral diplomacy. Wilson’s foreign policy decisions were also guided by the belief that democratic governments were superior to other forms of government.
