Concept note-1: -In addition to the 50 states, the United States contains unincorporated organized territories which are governed by and subject to parts of the U.S. Constitution but do not have state status. Those territories are American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.
Concept note-2: -The term excludes the only two non-contiguous states, Alaska and Hawaii (also the last ones admitted to the Union), and all other offshore insular areas, such as American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
