Concept note-1: -U.S. military leaders feared potential Japanese occupation of the islands and created a strategic naval base in the center of the Pacific. This provided enough fuel in Congress to pass annexation legislation, in order to save themselves from the perceived “threat of the Asiatics.” Hawaii was annexed in 1898.
Concept note-2: -America’s annexation of Hawaii in 1898 extended U.S. territory into the Pacific and highlighted resulted from economic integration and the rise of the United States as a Pacific power. For most of the 1800s, leaders in Washington were concerned that Hawaii might become part of a European nation’s empire.
Concept note-3: -The United States wanted to use Hawaii as a platform from which they could have a dominant Military presence in the Pacific. It was whaling, sugar and pineapples that first brought Pearl Harbor to America’s attention. U.S. business interests and naval strategists had long coveted the island kingdom.
