In The Influence of Sea Power upon History, Alfred Thayer Mahan studied the rise and fall of naval powers. He concluded that supremacy at sea was essential for a nation’s political and commercial success.

In this book he argued for the paramount importance of sea power in national historical supremacy. The book, which came at a time of great technological improvement in warships, won immediate recognition abroad.
