Concept note-1: -In 1913, 412 million people lived under the control of the British Empire, 23 percent of the world’s population at that time. It remains the largest empire in human history and at the peak of its power in 1920, it covered an astonishing 13.71 million square miles-that’s close to a quarter of the world’s land area.

Concept note-2: -GREAT BRITAIN-THE ISLAND EMPIRE Under the previous Queen Victoria (1837-1901) it had become the richest and and most powerful nation on earth. Through trade and conquest, England had been able to build more wealth and the world’s largest Naval force.

Concept note-3: -The British Empire was at its largest in 1919, after Britain acquired Germany’s East and West African colonies and Samoa in the Treaty of Versailles, which marked the end of the First World War, 1914–18.

Concept note-4: -At the beginning of the 20th century the British Empire covered more than 11, 400, 000 square miles of territory. This made it the largest empire the world had ever known.

Concept note-5: -By 1913, the British Empire held sway over 412 million people, 23 per cent of the world population at the time, and by 1920, it covered 35.5 million km2 (13.7 million sq mi), 24 per cent of the Earth’s total land area. As a result, its constitutional, legal, linguistic, and cultural legacy is widespread.
