Concept note-1: -It arose in the 19th century as a nationalist movement amongst the German-speaking population of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It favours close ties with Germany, which it views as the nation-state for all ethnic Germans, and the possibility of the incorporation of Austria into a Greater Germany.

Concept note-2: -Nationalism also led to conflict within empires. Multinational territories such as the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary combined many ethnic groups under one rule. In 1867, the countries of Austria and Hungary combined to form a new nation, Austria-Hungary.

Concept note-3: -An important element of German nationalism, as promoted by the government and intellectual elite, was the emphasis on Germany asserting itself as a world economic and military power, aimed at competing with France and the British Empire for world power.

Concept note-4: -Nationalism affected Germany and Austria-Hungry differently because when several German States came together to form the country of Germany it brought stability to Germany. But it caused instability in Austria-Hungry because the Slavic’s wanted to break away from Austria-Hungary and join the country of Serbia.
