EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -On Nov. 11, 1918, after more than four years of horrific fighting and the loss of millions of lives, the guns on the Western Front fell silent. Although fighting continued elsewhere, the armistice between Germany and the Allies was the first step to ending World War I.

Concept note-2: -The German government approached the United States with a request for an armistice. They hoped that this would be based on the ‘Fourteen Points’ laid down in January 1918 by US President Woodrow Wilson as a foundation for ‘peace without victory’.

Concept note-3: -For both sides, an armistice was the fastest way to end the war’s misery and carnage. By November 1918, both the Allies and Central Powers who’d been battering each other for four years were pretty much out of gas.

Concept note-4: -The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918. Armistice is Latin for to stand (still) arms. To this day we mark Armistice Day around the United Kingdom with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.
