Concept note-1: -Trench foot: Prolonged exposure to moisture and cold without freezing produces trench or immersion foot. There is profound neurovascular damage with pain, swelling, and ulcerations, predisposing the soldier to gangrene.

Concept note-2: -’Trench foot’ was caused by permanently damp feet, and ‘trench fever’ had symptoms similar to ‘flu. On other fronts, men fought diseases such as malaria and sand fly fever. The importance of keeping dirt and disease at bay was recognised by the army authorities and by the men themselves.

Concept note-3: -Trench foot is a type of non-freezing cold injury. This means the temperature that causes the condition is usually cold but above freezing. Other non-freezing cold injuries include chilblains, frostnip and Raynaud’s phenomenon. Trench foot can cause skin and tissue breakdown, which can increase your risk for infection.

Concept note-4: -As with typhus on the Eastern Front-a rickettsial disease that killed soldiers-control of lice was the key to managing the epidemic of Trench Fever.
