Concept note-1: -Triple Alliance, secret agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed in May 1882 and renewed periodically until World War I.

Concept note-2: -Why did Italy join the Triple Alliance in 1915 rather than go to war on the side of its allies Germany and Austria-Hungary in August 1914? The newly-unified Italy joined the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1881. Like Germany it wanted colonies.

Concept note-3: -The Central Powers’ origin was the alliance of Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1879. Despite having nominally joined the Triple Alliance before, Italy did not take part in World War I on the side of the Central Powers.
