Concept note-1: -The assassination team was helped by the Black Hand, a Serbian secret nationalist group; support came from Dragutin Dimitrijević, at the time chief of the military intelligence section of the Serbian general staff, as well as from Major Vojislav Tankosić and Rade Malobabić, a Serbian intelligence agent.

Concept note-2: -The Black Hand (Unification or Death) was formed by a ring of influential officers of the Serbian army, headed by Dragutin Dimitrijević (1876-1917), known as “Apis”, in May 1911.

Concept note-3: -Unification or Death (Serbian: Ujedinjenje ili smrt, Serbian Cyrillic: ), popularly known as the Black Hand (Serbian: Crna ruka, Serbian Cyrillic: ), was a secret military society formed in 1901 by officers in the Army of the Kingdom of Serbia.

Concept note-4: -The assassin – Gavrilo Princip – was a member of a Bosnian Serb nationalist group seeking to unite territories containing ethnic Serbs under Serbia’s control.

Concept note-5: -When it was learned that the heir-apparent to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand, was scheduled to visit Sarajevo in June of 1914, the Black Hand decided to assassinate him because of his perceived threat to Serbian independence.
