EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The United States never ratified the Versailles treaty and made a separate peace treaty with Germany. Although the armistice of 11 November 1918 ended the actual fighting, it took six months of Allied negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty.

Concept note-2: -President Woodrow Wilson was the primary architect of the League of Nations, an international peacekeeping organization that was the centerpiece of the Treaty of Versailles. The Senate rejected the treaty for ratification, and the United States never joined the League of Nations.

Concept note-3: -Despite the United States never becoming an official member of the League of Nations, American individuals and organizations interacted with the League throughout its existence.

Concept note-4: -Despite Wilson’s efforts, including a nationwide speaker tour, the Treaty of Versailles was rejected by the United States Senate twice, in 1919 and 1920. The United States ultimately signed a separate peace treaty with Germany in 1921, although it never joined the League of Nations.

Concept note-5: -China was the only country to send delegates to the Paris Peace Conference, but to have none sign the Treaty of Versailles. This was because Article 156 in the treaty handed the administration of Germany’s overseas territories in China to Japan.
