Concept note-1: -The British project of repatriating freed slaves in the ‘Province of Freedom’, now known as Sierra Leone, can be linked to development challenges facing the country today.

Concept note-2: -The British began to take interest in Sierra Leone and in 1672 the Royal African Company established Forts on the Islands of Bunce and York for trading. With the emergence of the slave trade, human being became the major commodity in the market. Indigenes were sold as slaves.

Concept note-3: -Over the course of the 1700s, over 400, 000 people were kidnapped from the Sierra Leone region and transported on the Middle Passage, composing about 16 percent of the enslaved people who arrived in British colonies in the Caribbean and North America in those years.

Concept note-4: -Most of the slaves of Sierra Leone were imported to southeast, mainly to South Carolina (where arrived the 70% of those slaves.

Concept note-5: -Haiti (then Saint-Domingue) formally declared independence from France in 1804 and became the first sovereign nation in the Western Hemisphere to unconditionally abolish slavery in the modern era.
