Concept note-1: -The failures of the League in the 1930s were not only because of aggressor nations undermining its authority, but also down to its own members. Britain and France, the two most influential members, ignored the League in their efforts to appease Hitler-actions that arguably led to the outbreak of the Second World War.
Concept note-2: -Motivated by Republican concerns that the League would commit the United States to an expensive organization that would reduce the United States’ ability to defend its own interests, Lodge led the opposition to joining the League.
Concept note-3: -However, the League ultimately failed to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War, and has therefore been viewed by historians as a largely weak, ineffective, and essentially powerless organization.
Concept note-4: -On February 28, 1919, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts began an assault on President Woodrow Wilson’s proposal to establish a League of Nations that ultimately culminated in the Senate’s rejection of the Treaty of Versailles.
