EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -After World War I, Iraq passed from the failing Ottoman Empire to British control. Kingdom of Iraq was established under the British Mandate in 1932.
Concept note-2: -In the 16th century, most of the territory of present-day Iraq came under the control of Ottoman Empire as the pashalik of Baghdad. Throughout most of the period of Ottoman rule (1533–1918) the territory of present-day Iraq was a battle zone between the rival regional empires and tribal alliances.
Concept note-3: -Britain seized Iraq from Ottoman Turkey during World War I and was granted a mandate by the League of Nations to govern the nation in 1920. A Hashemite monarchy was organized under British protection in 1921, and on October 3, 1932, the kingdom of Iraq was granted independence.
Concept note-4: -In 1914, Great Britain invaded Iraq and Persia to gain control of the region’s vast oil resources. With the Allies attacking the Ottoman Empire from every direction and the ongoing discord between Iraq’s Shia and Sunni populations, the British anticipated an easy victory.
