What was the mandate system?

Concept note-1: -A League of Nations mandate was a legal status for certain territories transferred from the control of one country to another following World War I, or the legal instruments that contained the internationally agreed-upon terms for administering the territory on behalf of the League of Nations.

Concept note-2: -The Mandate System was devised by the League of Nations after WWI as a method to maintain peace and promote self-determination in territories formerly governed by the Ottoman and German Empires.

Concept note-3: -France took control of Syria and Lebanon. The stated goal of the Mandate System was that Britain and France would prepare these territories to rule themselves.

Concept note-4: -In international law, a mandate is a binding obligation issued from an inter-governmental organization (e.g. the United Nations) to a country which is bound to follow the instructions of the organization. Before the creation of the United Nations, all mandates were issued from the League of Nations.

Concept note-5: -Class C mandates consisted of various former German-held territories that mandatories subsequently administered as integral parts of their territory: South West Africa (now Namibia, assigned to South Africa), New Guinea (assigned to Australia), Western Samoa (now Samoa, assigned to New Zealand), the islands.
