EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -On the night of 2-3 October 1935, Italian forces invaded Abyssinian territory from Eritrea. At the end of an unequal struggle, during which the Italian army used chemical weapons, Abyssinia was finally conquered at the beginning of March 1936 and annexed by the Kingdom of Italy .
Concept note-2: -In 1935, the Italian army under Mussolini invaded Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia). Mussolini wanted to recreate the Roman Empire and was a prominent member of the League of Nations.
Concept note-3: -The aim of invading Ethiopia was to boost Italian national prestige, which was wounded by Ethiopia’s defeat of Italian forces at the Battle of Adowa in the nineteenth century (1896), which saved Ethiopia from Italian colonisation.
Concept note-4: -The Emperor of Abyssinia, Haile Selassie (’Power of the Trinity’), appealed for help to the League of Nations, an association of states dedicated to world peace, and dominated by Britain and France. On 4 September 1935, the League appointed a Committee of Five to report on the threat of war.
Concept note-5: -On 6 December 1934, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia protested the Italian aggression at Walwal. On 8 December, Italy demanded an apology for Ethiopian aggression, and on 11 December, it followed up that demand with another for financial and strategic compensation.
