Concept note-1: -Åland is an autonomous, demilitarised, Swedish-speaking region of Finland. Åland consists of more than 6, 700 islands, but the current population of over 30, 000 live on only 60 islands. Over 40 per cent of the inhabitants live in the only town, Mariehamn, which is one of Åland’s 16 municipalities.

Concept note-2: -Autonomy of Åland Islands In 1920, Finland granted wide-reaching cultural and political autonomy to the Åland Islands. The League of Nations considered these measures as satisfying demands to protect the Swedish language and culture there.

Concept note-3: -Åland Islands, Swedish Åland Skärgård, Finnish Ahvenanmaa, archipelago constituting Åland (Ahvenanmaa) autonomous territory, southwestern Finland.

Concept note-4: -Although Åland is part of the Republic of Finland, it has its own autonomous parliament. In areas where Åland has its own legislation, the group of islands essentially operates as an independent nation. Åland is a demilitarised and neutral zone. The Ålandic Parliament, the Lagting, is the highest authority.

Concept note-5: -32 A referendum was held on the Aaland Islands on December 31, 1917, and the population voted overwhelmingly for union with Sweden.
