Concept note-1: -In 1920, the four permanent members were the British Empire, France, Italy, and Japan. The non-permanent members were elected by the Assembly for a three-year term. The composition of the Council varied over time. When it first met on 16 December 1920, there were four non-permanent members.
Concept note-2: -The Council included four permanent members (Britain, France, Italy and Japan) and four (later nine) others elected by the General Assembly every three years.
Concept note-3: -The League of Nations officially came into existence on 10 January 1920. On 15 November 1920, 41 members states gathered in Geneva for the opening of the first session of the Assembly.
Concept note-4: -The Council began with four permanent members (The United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan) and four non-permanent members which were elected by the Assembly for a three-year period. The first four non-permanent members were Belgium, Brazil, Greece and Spain.
