EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Accidents were common when using the heavy excavation machinery. But the most dangerous aspects of the Canal project were tropical diseases and the environment. Yellow Fever and Malaria were rampant in the work camps, killing people daily.

Concept note-2: -The discovery by Major Ronald Ross that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes had tremendous impact on development programs in the tropics. One of the first of these was the construction of the Panama Canal, which began within a few years after Dr. Ross’s discovery.

Concept note-3: -Over 22, 000 workers died during the French effort to build the Canal, many of them from malaria and yellow fever. The symptoms of yellow fever were terrifying: fever, headaches, back pain, extreme thirst, and black vomit from internal bleeding.

Concept note-4: -With less water, the canal is forced to place restrictions on the amount of cargo ships can carry, meaning carriers have to limit the shippers they can serve on routes that rely on this waterway.
