Concept note-1: -Mahan wanted the United States to build a blue-water navy. He wanted the nation to promote and subscribe to policies that would require the development of a large navy consistent with his theories as expressed in The Influence of Sea Power. As he later wrote: Navies are instruments of international relations . . .

Concept note-2: -For Mahan, control of the Caribbean was essential to control of the canal, which was essential for the protection of all three coastlines of the United States. As an essentially “island” nation, it was of the utmost importance that the United States protect its coastline and its interests with a powerful navy.

Concept note-3: -Alfred Thayer Mahan was a late 19th and early 20th century United States Navy officer, an instructor at the Naval War College, author, and naval historian. He is considered America’s foremost naval strategist, advocating for the expansion of the US fleet and a vigorous foreign policy.

Concept note-4: -With economic conflict leading to potential political conflict, which in turn would lead to military conflict, he believed that America required a solid strategy based in naval strength.

Concept note-5: -Mahan feel the United States should build up its naval power? Alfred T. Mahan believed that the US should build its navy to protect US shipping interests and stay competitive with evermore imperialist European nations.
