Concept note-1: -The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba, the “Rough Riders” was the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the volunteer cavalry.

Concept note-2: -noun. rough·ri·der ˈrəf-ˈrī-dər. : one who is accustomed to riding unbroken or little-trained horses. usually Rough Rider : a member of the first U.S. Volunteer Cavalry regiment in the Spanish-American War commanded by Theodore Roosevelt.

Concept note-3: -They gathered a diverse bunch of men consisting of cowboys, gold or mining prospectors, hunters, gamblers, Native Americans, and college boys-all of whom were able-bodied and capable on horseback and in shooting. Half the unit would come from New Mexico according to Roosevelt.
