Even with citizen’s of Hawaii were protesting, President McKinley decided to support the annexation of Hawaii. Why?

(A) to support growing tourism industry within the US

(B) to support expansion of US interest in China

(C) to support the US Senate’s majority opinion thus gaining political favor.

(D) ** To support the expanding US agricultural industries and getting a Pacific coaling station.

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -On June 16, 1897, McKinley and three representatives of the government of the Republic of Hawaii – Lorrin Thurston, Francis Hatch, and William Kinney – signed a treaty of annexation. President McKinley then submitted the treaty to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

Concept note-2: -America’s annexation of Hawaii in 1898 extended U.S. territory into the Pacific and highlighted resulted from economic integration and the rise of the United States as a Pacific power. For most of the 1800s, leaders in Washington were concerned that Hawaii might become part of a European nation’s empire.

Concept note-3: -Nearly half the Native Hawaiians sign a petition to Congress opposing annexation. Liliu’okalani, the former queen deposed by the U.S. military, travels to Washington, D.C., several times to plead for the rights of Native Hawaiians and for the fair settlement of crown lands.

Concept note-4: -On January 16, 1893, United States troops invaded the Hawaiian Kingdom without just cause, which led to a conditional surrender by the Hawaiian Kingdom’s executive monarch, Her Majesty Queen Lili’uokalani, the following day.
