Concept note-1: -In 1893, after Lili’uokalani attempted to push forward a new constitution, American landowners staged a coup. Between 1893 and 1898, Lili’uokalani and her fellow Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) mobilized against US annexation of Hawai’i through political parties, in the press, and with petitions.

Concept note-2: -Liliʻuokalani (Hawaiian pronunciation: [liˌliʔuokəˈlɐni]; Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha; September 2, 1838 – November 11, 1917) was the only queen regnant and the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruling from January 29, 1891, until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893.

Concept note-3: -House Joint Resolution 259, 55th Congress, 2nd session, known as the “Newlands Resolution, ” passed Congress and was signed into law by President McKinley on July 7, 1898-the Hawaiian islands were officially annexed by the United States. Sanford Dole became the first Governor of the Territory of Hawaii.

Concept note-4: -In January 1893, a group of American and European businessmen, with the support of U.S. Minister John Stevens and a contingent of U.S. Marines, staged a coup to depose the queen. Liliuokalani surrendered, with hopes of appealing to President Cleveland to reinstate her.

Concept note-5: -The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom was a coup d’état against Queen Liliʻuokalani, which took place on January 17, 1893, on the island of Oahu and led by the Committee of Safety, composed of seven foreign residents and six non-aboriginal Hawaiian Kingdom subjects of American descent in Honolulu.
