Concept note-1: -José Julián Martí Pérez (Spanish pronunciation: [xoˈse maɾˈti]; January 28, 1853 – May 19, 1895) was a Cuban nationalist, poet, philosopher, essayist, journalist, translator, professor, and publisher, who is considered a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country from Spain.

Concept note-2: -After failing to contest Batista in court, Fidel Castro organized an armed attack on the Cuban military’s Moncada Barracks. The rebels were arrested and while in prison formed the 26th of July Movement.

Concept note-3: -Jose Marti was a Cuban poet, philosopher, and revolutionist who fought for Cuba’s independence from Spain. Marti was exiled and began a latin american pilgrimage before settling in New York City in 1880 where he spent 15 years of his life.

Concept note-4: -Why did José Martí encourage Cuban rebels to destroy sugar mills and plantations? Martí hoped to provoke the United States into helping Cuba win inde-pendence from Spain. The Cuban political activist José Martí dedicated his life to achiev-ing independence for Cuba.
