Concept note-1: -During President McKinley’s tenure, the United States fought and won a war with a European power and acquired overseas territories. Along with the Philippines, the United States obtained Guam and Puerto Rico and occupied Cuba. In short, the United States emerged on the world stage in new and unprecedented ways.

Concept note-2: -U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba, and to cede sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. The United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii during the conflict.

Concept note-3: -McKinley sees the US as fighting for its interests in the Pacific, in large part by attacking Spain’s possessions such as the Phillippines. In part this was to gain the support of American voters. Also, it would provide military advantage over Spain.

Concept note-4: -During the month of December in 1897, reports of horrific famine and disease in Cuba prompted a response from the United States government. President McKinley was deeply disturbed by the 1897 effects of Spain’s reconcentration policy and appealed for humanitarian aid for starving Cubans.
