EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Alfred Thayer Mahan supported moving the United States into a position of power by-strengthening U.S. naval capacity. Missionaries played a role in the territorial expansion of the United States by-operating abroad in foreign locations such as Hawaii.

Concept note-2: -Hawaii was attractive to American imperialists for two reasons. First, its natural resources, especially sugar, could be exploited. Second, it was an ideal location for a naval base.

Concept note-3: -The growing popular demand for U.S. intervention became an insistent chorus after the still-unexplained sinking in Havana harbor of the American battleship USS Maine, which had been sent to protect U.S. citizens and property after anti-Spanish rioting in Havana.

Concept note-4: -In order for American industrialists to gain greater access to Asian markets, the United States sought to expand into new territories in the Pacific region. As a result, before the War of 1898, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia and annexed Hawaii.
