Concept note-2: -The main cause of death during the American Civil War was not battle injury but disease. About two-thirds of the 620, 000 deaths of Civil War soldiers were caused by disease, including 63% of Union fatalities.

Concept note-3: -The campaign that resulted in the most US military deaths was the Battle of Normandy (June 6 to August 25, 1944) in which 29, 204 soldiers were killed fighting against Nazi Germany.

Concept note-4: -Unsound hygiene, dietary deficiencies, and battle wounds set the stage for epidemic infection, while inadequate information about disease causation greatly hampered disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Pneumonia, typhoid, diarrhea/dysentery, and malaria were the predominant illnesses.
