Spanish American War

(A) U.S. battleship sent by President McKinney to Havana, Cuba to protect American citizens and property; February 15, 1898 an explosion destroyed it and killed about 260 of the 350 American sailors and officers on board; the U.S. yellow press blamed it on Spanish mined but the true cause of the explosion is a mystery

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The Spanish–American War (April 21 – August 13, 1898) was a period of armed conflict between Spain and the United States. Hostilities began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence .

Concept note-2: -12, 1898. Spain-having suffered major military defeats in Cuba and the Philippines, and with both of its fleets destroyed-sued for peace with the United States in a war that lasted four months.

Concept note-3: -The war officially ended four months later, when the U.S. and Spanish governments signed the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898.

Concept note-4: -The Spanish-American War was an 1898 conflict between the United States and Spain that ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in U.S. acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America.

Concept note-5: -The United States occupied Cuba and took possession of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The bloody struggle for independence in the Philippines resumed in 1899, the U.S. having replaced Spain as the colonial power.
