EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -Cuban revolutionaries intercepted the letter from the mail and released it to the Hearst press, which published it on February 9, 1898, in the New York Journal.

Concept note-2: -This letter, written by the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, criticized American President William McKinley by calling him weak and concerned only with gaining the favor of the crowd.

Concept note-3: -De Lôme’s unflattering remarks about McKinley helped stoke the flames that would become the Spanish–American War. Two months later, on April 11, 1898, McKinley delivered a war message to Congress suggesting “forcible intervention” by the United States to establish peace in Cuba.

Concept note-4: -February 9, 1898: Dupuy de Lôme Letter Scandal While in Washington in the middle of December, Spanish ambassador Enrique Dupuy de Lôme wrote a personal letter to his friend José Canalejas who was in Cuba.
