Concept note-1: -In the 1890’s Cubans began to agitate once again for their freedom from Spain. The moral leader of this struggle was José Martí, known as “El Apóstol, ” who established the Cuban Revolutionary Party on January 5, 1892 in the United States.

Concept note-2: -The Spanish–American War (April 21 – August 13, 1898) was a period of armed conflict between Spain and the United States. Hostilities began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence.

Concept note-3: -The immediate cause of the Spanish-American War was Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain.

Concept note-4: -Cuban juntas provided leadership and funds for the military operations conducted in Cuba. Spain possessed superior numbers of troops, forcing the Cuban generals Máximo Gómez and Antonio Maceo, to wage guerrilla warfare in the hope of exhausting the enemy. Operations began in southeastern Cuba but soon spread westward.
