Concept note-1: -The most spectacular of Roosevelt’s foreign policy initiatives was the establishment of the Panama Canal. For years, U.S. naval leaders had dreamed of building a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Central America.

Concept note-2: -In 1903, the United States negotiated a treaty with Colombia that granted the United States the right to construct and operate a canal for 100 years within a zone six-miles wide across Panama.

Concept note-3: -Roosevelt visiting the Panama Canal construction site In 1904, the US took over a massive overseas building project-a ship canal in Panama that would connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

Concept note-4: -Once he became president, Roosevelt acted quickly to establish plans to build the canal. In 1902, the U.S. reached an agreement to buy rights to the French canal property and equipment. Next, the U.S. then began negotiating a Panama treaty with Colombia.

Concept note-5: -In 1903, the United States supported a bloodless revolution in the Colombian province of Panama after the Colombian government rejected a U.S. treaty to acquire land in Panama to build the canal. The United States Senate offered $10 million for the land; the Colombian government wanted $25 million.
